I’ve written in the past about all the great things we’ve purchased on Craigslist, including our house itself, an antique roll-top desk, a beautiful Stickley cabinet, and the gorgeous Warren Hile Prairie Chair I scored earlier this year.  Well, this week it happened again, and Christmas came early, in the form of a pair of Stickley Three-Drawer Night Stands I found on Portland Craigslist.

The listing (below) stated that they were “Stickley Mission”, but I’ve noticed that people often use “Stickley” to describe the style of item they’re selling – even if it’s not necessarily an actual Stickley piece.

From the price they were asking, I had a hunch that they might not be real Stickleys, but I made arrangements with the sellers to meet them the following day and politely asked them to hold the nightstands for me until we met, to which they obliged.  However, about 15 minutes later when they called me back to tell me that someone had just contacted them who was willing to drive down that night from Tacoma, Washington (about 3 hours away!) to buy them, I knew I had to act fast.  So I told them that I’d be right over and immediately jumped in the car and drove down to meet them.

The fact that someone was willing to drive from 3 hours away to purchase these babies bolstered the notion that they were legit Stickleys.  So when I got there, the first thing I did was to look for the Stickley badge and logo burned into the inside of the top drawer…and there they were!  Like a kid on Christmas morning, I was delighted and relieved to see that they were indeed the real deal (above).

The bottom side of the top drawer (above) is marked with the number “89-910” which corresponds to the Stickley catalog number for this piece, and the “#35” represents the Fayetteville finish in quarter-sawn white oak.  There are also a couple bar code stickers from the factory and the manufacture date which is noted as “Sep 07 1994”.  If you’re curious, this piece is pictured at the bottom center of page 161 of the Stickley e-catalog – which I’d encourage you to flip through to see the full line of gorgeous furniture they offer.

Unfortunately, we don’t have enough room in our bedroom to put one of these nightstands on either side of our bed, so instead we’ve decided to put them on either side of the french doors in our living room.  Admittedly, they’re a little small for the space, but with a lamp or something else on top, I think they look just fine.  And as in years past, our Christmas tree is centered in front of those doors, so I think it looks perfect!

As I’ve said in the past, it’s no secret that it can be very expensive to furnish your bungalow home with period authentic antiques, but it doesn’t always have to be, and if you know where to look, there are great deals to be had, and Craigslist is a great place to start.

If you’ve never used Craigslist and have questions about how to search for things or how the site works, I’d be happy to help – so leave a question below!

Happy Hunting!
