The Craftsman Spotlight is an ongoing series where artists, businesses, and craftspeople are featured.  We’re thrilled to spotlight American Bungalow, in this first installment of the series!

If you’re reading this article right now – and are a fan of bungalows – there’s a pretty good chance that you’re familiar with American Bungalow magazine.  Founded by John Brinkmann in Sierra Madre, California, American Bungalow has been one of the driving forces behind the resurgence of interest in bungalow architecture and Arts & Crafts furnishings since its first issue appeared on news stands back in the Fall of 1990.  Published quarterly, American Bungalow continues to engage and inspire bungalow enthusiasts today with its insightful articles, compelling features, and alluring photography.

2013 American Bungalow Issue 79I remember the first time I was introduced to the magazine – it was in the living room of the 1912 craftsman home that my future wife’s parents were restoring in Eugene, Oregon.  They had a whole stack of issues going back several years that they would often refer to for design inspiration.  I started leafing through one of the issues and was immediately hooked.

At the time, I was in the process of seeking to purchase my first home, and had been looking at different style homes all over Portland, some of which were bungalows.  After being exposed to what a properly restored, period authentic bungalow really looked like in the pages of American Bungalow, my mind was now made up on

what style of home I wanted to buy – there was no doubt it was going to be a bungalow.

From that day forward, I’ve been a fervent bungalow devotee.  I did go on to purchase and restore my first bungalow and my wife and I have since purchased our second bungalow, which we’re currently restoring.  American Bungalow has played an integral role in that process, and we continue to draw inspiration from its pages every step of the way.

If you’re not familiar with the magazine, I encourage you to pick up a copy at a retailer near you or subscribe today – it might just change your life, like it did mine!
